WASHINGTON — Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction over testimony he gave in 2020, according to the US Justice Department.

The grand jury indictment was announced Thursday by the new U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan.

“The charges as alleged in this case represent a breach of the public trust at an extraordinary level,” she said in a statement.

President Donald Trump has frequently promised to go after political opponents and perceived enemies, including during his second campaign for the White House. He recently turned up the pressure, issuing a directive to Attorney General Pam Bondi in a social media post demanding urgent action against Comey and other officials.

“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”

The Justice Department’s statement said that if convicted, Comey could face up to five years in prison.

Comey’s lawyer didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
