Baby food pouches sold in NY, NJ recalled for potential lead contamination
Published in News & Features
A popular baby food company has expanded a voluntary recall of pouches that were sold in 28 states, including New York and New Jersey, due to possible lead contamination.
Following an initial recall on Sept. 16, Sprout Organics announced this week it was recalling additional lots of its Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach 3.5-ounce food pouches over “potentially elevated lead levels.”
The affected pouches, which were sold online, in Walgreens and at independent retailers, include “best by” dates of Oct. 29, Oct. 30 and Dec. 4 of this year, as well Feb. 4, 2026. Customers can return the items at the place of purchase for a full refund.
Sprout Organics said the recall was initiated after routine sampling, but did not say how much lead was discovered.
While no illnesses have been reported, and no other products were subject to the recall, the company warned that children “exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time” could potentially face “learning and development” delays or “other long-term health problems.”
There is no safe blood lead level in children, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which says the “effects of lead poisoning can be permanent and disabling.”
