You expect wood in a corn dog because that’s what let’s you eat a corn dog without getting messy hands. You don’t expect wood in the batter, which is why The Hillshire Foods Company recalled 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage on a stick products.

“The problem was discovered after the establishment received multiple consumer complaints, five of which involved injuries,” the USDA’s recall notice said. “The Hillshire Brands Company conducted an investigation and determined that the wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering.”

All of the 27 recalled products for retail sale were sold under the State Fair (various kinds of corn dogs) and Jimmy Dean (various kinds of sausage on a stick) brands. Unbranded “Batter Wrapped Franks on a Stick with Turkey and Chicken, Pork, Beef added” were sold to school districts and Department of Defense facilities.

All carry one of the USDA establishment numbers of Tyson Foods’ Hillshire Foods Company facility in Haltom City, Texas. To see a full list of the products recalled, click on the hyperlink.
