Trump: 'Deranged' Reps. Tlaib and Omar should be sent 'back from where they came'
Published in News & Features
President Donald Trump lashed out Wednesday at U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, saying the two Muslim members of Congress should be sent "back from where they came — as fast as possible."
Trump's comments, posted on his Truth Social platform, came after the two Democratic lawmakers could be seen shouting at him during Tuesday's State of the Union address.
Trump said Tlaib and Omar "screamed uncontrollably" during his address to a joint session of Congress.
" … they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized," the president wrote. "When people can behave like that, and knowing that they are Crooked and Corrupt Politicians, so bad for our Country, we should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible."
Tlaib, who represents Michigan's 12th Congressional District in Wayne and Oakland counties, was born and raised in Detroit. Her parents are immigrants from Palestine. She is the only Palestinian American serving in Congress.
Omar, from Minnesota, was born in Somalia and moved to the U.S. with her family in the 1990s.
On X, Tlaib said midday Wednesday that Trump can't handle two Muslim women "talking back and correcting him so now he is crashing out."
Tlaib's office did not immediately respond Wednesday evening to a request for comment on Trump's social media post labeling her "mentally deranged and sick."
During the State of the Union, Tlaib wore a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf and a pin reading "F--- ICE" in reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Both Tlaib and Omar shouted "you're killing Americans" at Trump during his speech, an apparent reference to ICE agents fatally shooting Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
Omar said Wednesday that she shouted at Trump after he said it was his responsibility to protect Americans.
"… He does not acknowledge the fact that two Americans, two of my constituents, two of our neighbors were killed," Omar said on CNN. "And it was important for me to just remind the American people that the president and his administration was responsible for killing two American citizens."
Federal agents shot and killed Pretti last month during a clash between protesters and federal authorities in Minneapolis. Two weeks before that, an ICE agent fatally shot Good while she was behind the wheel of a vehicle on a street in Minneapolis. Both Pretti and Good were 37 years old.
Dozens of Democrats in Congress, including Michigan's Sen. Gary Peters and Rep. Debbie Dingell, skipped Tuesday's speech altogether.
In the same post on Truth Social, Trump lashed out at liberal Hollywood stars Robert De Niro and Rosie O'Donnell.
De Niro spoke at a counter-event hosted by Democrats and activists during the State of the Union, where the Academy Award-winning actor said that he felt "betrayed" by his country, according to a Reuters report.
"(Tlaib and Omar) should actually get on a boat with Trump Deranged Robert De Niro, another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying — some of which is seriously CRIMINAL! When I watched him break down in tears last night, much like a child would do, I realized that he may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O’Donnell, who is right now in Ireland trying to figure out how to come back into our beautiful United States."
O'Donnell moved to Ireland last year, as Trump began his second term, Reuters reported.
