Iran's supreme leader and top security chief discuss war, Hormuz
Published in News & Features
Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei reiterated Iran’s conditions for ending the war with the U.S., during a meeting with his security chief.
Khamenei met with Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaee, according to a Telegram statement from the supreme leader’s office. That was a day after Rezaee held talks with senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan in Iran, part of an effort by the three powers to defuse tensions prevent another round of U.S.-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic.
Iran has previously said the U.S. must end a naval blockade of its ports for serious peace talks to begin. Washington is pushing for Iran to make concessions with its nuclear program.
The comments from Iran’s ultimate authority come amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in the region and statements from some Arab Gulf states calling for a coordinated security agreement to bring the conflict, which was triggered by U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran in February, to an end.
Tuesday’s meeting between Khamenei and Rezaee also covered Iran’s management of the Strait of Hormuz. The supreme leader called for the strengthening of ties with neighboring countries based on mutual interests.
