Emmy winner Jessica Gunning of “Baby Reindeer” fame will play Mamas & the Papas singer Cass “Mama Cass” Elliot in an upcoming biopic.

“My Mama Cass,” based on the 2024 memoir of the same name from Elliot’s daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, is “not a Mamas & the Papas biopic,” according to a press release viewed Thursday by Variety.

Rather, the Emma Forrest-penned film will focus solely on the “Make Your Own Kind of Music” crooner, born Ellen Naomi Cohen. It will finally put to bed the myth that Elliot died from choking on a ham sandwich.

Elliot was just 32 when she suffered a fatal heart attack in London. The ham sandwich rumor reportedly began as her manager Allan Carr’s attempt to stave off speculation that her death was linked to drug use. That was his way of “protecting her legacy. And they were trying to protect me,” Owen, 58, told People in 2024.

“So many of my mother’s peers had died from drug overdoses,” said Owen. “Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison. And I think Allan was afraid they’d make the same assumption.”

Drugs weren’t found in Elliot’s system when she died, but her daughter says she “would be surprised if there weren’t any drugs around” as “everybody was doing it.”

The press release confirms Showbiz 411’s recent report that announced the casting of “The Outlaws” star Gunning. The Daily News has reached out to Gunning’s reps for comment.

The Mamas & the Papas — which also included Michelle and John Phillips, as well as Denny Doherty — broke up in 1968, but not before producing enduring folk staples like “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday.”
