Robert Carradine‘s cause and manner of death have been confirmed by the medical examiner less than a week after the “Lizzie McGuire” star died by suicide at 71.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office listed “sequelae of anoxic brain injury” as Carradine’s primary cause of death, meaning he died from a lack of oxygen to the brain. His manner of death was confirmed as suicide by hanging, according to online records.

Carradine died on Monday following what his family described as a “valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder.”

His older brother, Oscar winner Keith Carradine, told Deadline the family wanted people to know about his condition in hopes of “addressing the stigma” attached to mental illness.

“It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul,” Keith said. “He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That’s who my baby brother was.”

Carradine’s daughter, Ever, also an actress, paid tribute to the man who was “all heart.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, who dated Carradine in the 1970s beginning when Ever was 3, fondly remembered their relationship as her “first experience with domesticity and motherhood and partnership.” She said she remained friends with the father and daughter even after they broke up.

Titular “Lizzie McGuire” star Hilary Duff said she experienced “so much warmth in the McGuire family,” and always “felt so cared for” by her onscreen parents, played by Carradine and Hallie Todd.

“I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering,” Duff wrote on social media. “My heart aches for him, his family and everyone who loved him.”

Todd described her onscreen husband as a “generous and loyal friend,” who was “brave, strong, kind and had a wicked sense of humor.”

She said her and Carradine’s families had grown extremely close over the past 25 years, calling their friendship her “most treasured personal gift from working on ‘Lizzie McGuire.'”
