Meryl Streep will voice four characters in Lincoln in the Bardo.

The 77-year-old actress has been announced alongside Colman Domingo, Bill Hader and Tom Waits for the animated and live action hybrid feature film.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Streep will voice four parts, including Abigail Blass and Elizabeth Crawford.

The Only Murders In The Building star will also play an Angel sent to lure lost souls out of the bardo, and a Demon trying to trap Willie Lincoln in the cemetery forever.

Domingo is set to voice the ghost of Thomas Havens, a former slave wanting a history-changing union with Lincoln.

Hader is set to play Eddie Baron and one of the Three Rakes, with Waits cast as Jasper Randall (the ghost of a dancehall performer) and a Demon.

Tom Hanks is starring as U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in the live action side of the project, while Jonathan Bailey, Willem Dafoe and Peter Dinklage become voice characters in the stop-motion portion.

The movie will be directed by Duke Johnson from a screenplay by George Saunders, who has adapted his own book delving into the death of Lincoln's 11-year-old son Willie.

Production will take place in London.

The synopsis for the film reads: "The film employs a unique blend of stop-motion animation and live action to explore one of the most intimate moments of Lincoln's life, centering on his relationship with his recently deceased eleven-year-old son.

"Blending history and imagination, the story unfolds through an unforgettable ensemble of characters -- living and dead, historical and invented -- to explore themes of love, empathy, and the human capacity for connection in the face of unimaginable grief."

Self-taught lawyer Lincoln is best known for abolishing slavery during his presidency, via the Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment.

He also led the US through the Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865.

Some have previously called for Hanks to run for President in real life - but he has laughed it off, so this film might be the closest fans get.

When asked about such speculation in 2016, he told Channel Nine's 60 Minutes: "Oh dear lord, that would be a disaster.

"Who the hell would want that job? I never want to have any job where I have to answer the phone."
