My Answer

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I’m an aviation student and was doing well until I experienced vertigo during simulation. I’m rethinking my career options, and suddenly I don’t feel so certain of where my future is going and I’m feeling trapped. Am I wrong to believe God sends signs to guide us through the fog of life? – S.S.

A: Sometimes we suffer spiritual vertigo. Consider the pilot whose plane is surrounded by fog, or smog, or the clouds. Many pilots have suffered vertigo at some time. What must the pilot do at such a moment? The pilot must watch and depend on his instrument panel.

Trust in Christ. He has given to us His instrument panel: His Word. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6, NKJV). This is the unfailing instrument panel of God.

The Bible tells of a Philippian jailer who was guarding prisoners – the Apostle Paul and his traveling companion Silas, who were fastened in stocks – imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. As Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God, ministering to their fellow prisoners, an earthquake caused the foundations to shake, jarring the doors open. Prison chains were loosed. The jailer was terrified, fearing the prisoners had escaped. But when the jailer encountered Paul still there, he trembled before him and cried out, “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30, NKJV). Paul didn’t give him a theological examination. Paul simply said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (16:31, NKJV). That very night, this terrified man made his commitment to Christ, and his life was changed. He had seen the power of God operating in the apostle’s life.

When we put our trust in Christ and make Him the center of life, He will guide us. This is belief in Christ.
