Trump to meet congressional leaders Monday as US shutdown nears
Published in Political News
WASHINGTON — The top four congressional leaders will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, according to two people familiar with the matter, as the threat of an Oct. 1 government shutdown looms.
The meeting will be the first between Trump and Democratic leaders ahead of the funding deadline. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and his House counterpart, Hakeem Jeffries, were expected to meet with the president this week but the meeting was canceled by the White House at the last minute.
Trump previously said that Democrats must drop their demands for renewing health care subsidies and ending Medicaid cuts before he would agree to sit down with them. He also predicted that a shutdown was likely.
“I’d love to meet with them, but I don’t think it’s going to have any impact,” Trump told reporters last week.
Punchbowl News first reported the meeting.
