Trump baselessly blames Rob Reiner murder on anger over director's politics

President Donald Trump on Monday cryptically appeared to blame the murders of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner on the Hollywood icon’s famously liberal political stances.

The president derided Rob Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and claimed he was killed due to anger caused by his harsh criticism of Trump.

Without citing any evidence, Trump said the killings were “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as Trump derangement syndrome, sometimes referred to as TDS,” he wrote on his social media site .”He was known to have driven people crazy by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump.”

Trump added that Reiner’s “obvious paranoia reach(ed) new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations.”

Contrary to Trump’s claims, there was no sign politics played a role in the Reiners’ murders nor any reason to believe their liberal beliefs could have served as a movie or justification for the shocking killings.

Trump’s outburst came the morning after the Reiners’ bodies were found inside their suburban Los Angeles mansion and just minutes before police announced they charged the Reiners’ troubled son, Nick Reiner, in connection with their murders.

The Reiners were both outspoken about their liberal politics and were prolific donors to Democratic candidates and causes. They also regularly trashed Trump’s policies, including his controversial crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Their murders sparked an outpouring of grief from friends and political leaders including statements of condolences from former President Barack Obama and ex-first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

Republicans mostly stayed silent but no other GOP prominent leaders joined Trump in seeking to blame Reiner for his own murder and that of his wife of 36 years.
