DUBLIN — Skylar Thompson, who entered the season as the Pittsburgh Steelers' No. 3 quarterback but has been out with a calf injury, has unexpectedly become one of the most prominent names from this momentous franchise trip to Ireland.

Thompson was involved in an incident Friday night in Dublin, according to a statement from Steelers senior director of communications Burt Lauten. The Steelers will have no further comment as they work with NFL security to gather more information.

NFL Network reported that Thompson was jumped and robbed but only sustained minor injuries and remains with the team. The Steelers are staying at The Carton House hotel about 40 minutes from the Dublin city center. Players were allowed to leave their complex after practice Friday and some did.

The Steelers opted to bring practice squad players and injured reserve players such as Thompson on the trip. The mild-mannered Thompson, 28, is in his fourth season. Given that he's not on the active roster, he is not obligated to be available to the media after the game. This isn't his first international NFL trip, as he was with the Miami Dolphins in 2023 when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in Frankfurt, Germany.

"We are aware of the incident involving Skylar Thompson in Ireland and are relieved to know he is okay," the NFL Players' Association said in a statement. "The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place. As always, our priority is the health and safety of our player members — especially as we continue to work on player protections and well-being while playing international games — and we will continue to support Skylar in any way he needs."
