Gadgets: A versatile lantern for your adventures
Published in Science & Technology News
Duracell's 3000 Lumens Solar Lantern gets power from solar charging, USB-C charging of the internal rechargeable battery or from four alkaline D batteries (not included).
The versatile and portable (5.35 by 5.0 by 10.1 inches) light is ideal for camping or backyard adventures. Once it's on, there are power beam settings, with choices of high, medium, eco-mode, dimming and a red flasher.
The 4400 mAh Li-ion internal battery powers the lantern and can supply power to external devices. There is a USB-A power outlet port for device charging and a top-side wireless QI charging pad. Both the USB-C power in and the USB-A out ports are behind a rubber tab, which must be closed to ensure its IPX4 water-resistant rating.
Using it is easy; a front power button toggles through the mode settings. The USB ports are located below, and pressing a button folds up the solar panel to expose the QI charging pad. The 2.14-pound lantern has a built-in carrying handle.

When I first opened the Soundpeats Pop Clip earbuds ($39.99), I thought they looked different. After hearing them, I thought "Wow, what a great set of earbuds for a great price."
The open-ear design allows you to hear the sound loud and clear, without any earbuds going into your ear canal. Instead, they rest on the outside; you still hear everything along with your surroundings, making them ideal if you're a street runner or anywhere you want to hear the environment.
Open-ear earbuds won't give you the head-banging sound that other, more powerful (and expensive) earbuds deliver. Instead, you get good sound quality. They connect via Bluetooth V5.4, which allows them to be connected to a pair of devices simultaneously.
I used the ergonomically designed and sweat-proof (IPX5) Pop Clip earbuds on a few bike rides, nighttime dog walks and quick grocery store trips. They did exactly what they're touted for, letting me listen to music while biking, attending baseball games at night, and hearing cars, shoppers and all the surrounding sounds.
It's also worth noting that Pop Clips do not have over-the-ear earhooks. Instead, they clip onto the side of your ear, which is a big deal to bikers. Their design did not interfere with my helmet or prescription sunglasses.
The Pop Clips weigh 0.16 ounces each and are rated for an 8-hour playtime and up to 30 hours with the included USB-C charging storage case. Inside each earbud is a 10.8mm dual-magnet driver. On-ear controls performed well for pausing music, adjusting volume and accessing voice assistants.
The sound is clear with a nice amount of bass, which is perfect for open-ear sound. The PeatsAudio app can be used to customize the sound, which includes equalizer settings. The app also features earbud tracking, displaying the last known location and triggering a beeping alert to help locate them if they're within 50 meters.
Another open-ear sound option from Soundpeats is the award-winning PearlClip Pro ($59.99) clip-on earbuds.
They feature a slightly more powerful sound than the Pop Clips. The PearlClip Pro boasts 12mm dual-magnet drivers, powered by dynamic equalizer algorithms, which enhance bass performance with clear highs and deep bass sound. They have a 0.20 ounce weight, and the ergonomic open-ear clip design ensures all-day comfort for any use, whether you're active, taking a neighborhood walk, or just lying on the sofa.
Each charge provides 6 hours of listing and an additional 18 hours with the storage, USB-C charging case. A 10-minute quick charge will give you about 2 hours of playtime.
